Challenge Fuel Channel Shifting
The pressure tubes in the customer’s CANDU reactor, where the nuclear fuel bundles reside, had grown due to irradiation to the extent that they could no longer operate until the next Major Component Replacement (MCR) was planned.
New tooling was required to reposition the fuel channel to extend the design life and be available at the next scheduled outage plan.

Westinghouse collaborated closely with the customer & the extended project team to develop a state-of-the-art system within an outage window to reposition the fuel channels.
Existing tools were modified to improve operational experience and new controls were developed tools to meet the current standards for safety and security ensuring procedural compliance. A rigorous process was followed including:
