CNL is planning to redevelop their CRL campus which will change the fire risk profile of the site. Westinghouse developed a risk-based fire protection model to display the current fire risk profile of the CRL campus while also addressing the change in risk. The model allows CNL staff to assess the degree to which the site meets the fire protection goals & objectives.

The risk-based model:

Westinghouse performed a CCR for the Solidification Process Facility, at CNL’s Whiteshell Laboratories site. Westinghouse reviewed designs to ensure that the facility aligned with construction and operational codes and standards, as well as completed a Fire Hazard Assessment. Scope included determining the adequacy of the fire protection measures, identifying plausible fire scenarios, verifying that loss limiting criteria were not exceeded, identifying where fire hazards exist, and providing cost effective recommendations to mitigate the identified hazards.

Westinghouse’s experts performed an evaluation of CNL’s FPP in consideration of industry best practices. Our experts developed a risk-based fire protection services model that addresses the existing and forecasted site fire risk profile. The developed model allows CNL to perform live assessments of fire protection goals and objectives for their site. The model allows CNL to evaluate fire resource needs (e.g. fire protection systems, fire brigade, etc.) as the site changes. This tool prompts cost savings while maintaining regulatory requirements.

Addition of two new buildings to the existing KF Aerospace facility resulted in the existing Fire Alarm System needing replacement. Due to the interconnected facility, a two-stage operational system was required. Having a modified two stage system allows various parts of the facility to remain operational during an incident in a different area. This feature is especially useful when a false alarm is raised or when small, insignificant incidents occur.

Westinghouse was retained by Tetra Tech to perform a Fire Protection TPR of the design modifications undertaken to the existing fire protection systems installed within the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station.
